Due to offices in Washington, DC and New York, NY, medical, vision and dental insurance may be different. Please note as to which location you are applying and which health care information applies. All premiums for medical, dental (if applicable), and vision (if applicable) are deducted on a pre-tax basis.
NY employees: Two healthcare options are available for employees to choose from with our current medical insurance provider, BlueCross BlueShield - a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Advantage Plan, or a BlueCross BlueShield/ CareFirst PPO plan. Coverage is effective on the first day of the month following your date of hire. If your hire date is the first of the month, you will be eligible for coverage on date of hire. While Americans for the Arts pays most of the cost of the medical coverage cost, eligible employees contribute to the cost depending on the tier of coverage that is chosen. All employee contributions are done on a pre-tax basis. Both discounted vision care and prescription coverage are included in the plans.

Americans for the Arts employees may participate in a comprehensive dental plan through Guardian Life Insurance Company (Guardian). New employees are eligible the first day of next month after they are hired. Americans for the Arts pays the premium for you fully and ½ the premium for additional dependents. There is no co-pay associated for dental visits.
Americans for the Arts employees may participate in a comprehensive vision insurance plan through Vision Service Plan (VSP). New employees are eligible the first day of the next month after they are hired. Americans for the Arts pays the premium for you fully and ½ the premium for additional dependents.
Prescription Drug Plan
Americans for the Arts offers a five-tiered prescription plan coordinated through CVS Caremark. Mail order service is available for a three month’s supply for the cost of two co-pays (per physician approval).
Health Club Memberships
Employees and their dependents (over age 14) may participate in a corporate membership program set up by Americans for the Arts through Town Sports International, Inc. (ex. Washington Sports Clubs and New York Sports Clubs), CRUNCH Gym (NYC), and Balance Gym (DC) for reduced monthly membership rates and lowered initiation fees. The costs are deducted through payroll and require a year-long commitment.
Flexible Spending Account
This plan administered by The 125Company has several parts including: medical flexible spending account, a dependent care spending account, transportation, and parking spending accounts. Participation in these plans allows you to pay for certain eligible expenses with pre-tax dollars and can offer significant savings. You may participate in all plans upon date of hire, but benefits may not be available until the following month, depending on your start date. NY employees are also able to utilize the transportation savings account for NY area transportation needs. Flexible Spending amounts are set by law; $260 per month for parking and $260 per month for transit.
Retirement Savings Plan – 403(b)
Employees are automatically enrolled with a 2% pre-tax payroll deduction in the retirement plan, Principal Financial. While everyone is automatically enrolled, all staff have the option to change their contribution amount and/or opt-out from the plan. Americans for the Arts will make matching contributions on your behalf beginning the first pay period of the month following the date of hire, if you are enrolled in the plan. The employer contribution percentage and vesting will follow the established schedule, but is subject to change. You are able to select your investment options from the available choices within the plan.
Life Insurance/Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance
Americans for the Arts pays the full cost of term life insurance at two times an employee’s annual salary to a maximum of $400,000 and an additional equal payment in the event of accidental death. Coverage is effective the first day of the month following your date of hire. Employees are also able to purchase additional life insurance for themselves or dependents at their own cost up to $500,000 in $10,000 increments.
Short Term Disability Insurance
Americans for the Arts covers the premium for a short term disability insurance policy that provides income continuation in the event that you become disabled for a short period of time and cannot work. After an eight-day waiting period and upon approval of the carrier, you will receive 60% of your weekly salary to a maximum of $2,500 per week for up to 13 weeks while you are medically unable to work.
Long Term Disability Insurance
Americans for the Arts pays the full cost of a long term disability insurance policy that provides income continuation in the event that you become totally disabled and cannot work. There is a 90-day wait for commencement of benefits. Upon insurance company approval, you will receive 66 2/3% of monthly earnings to a maximum of $13,000 per month.
Employees earn 3.75 hours per pay period (12 days annually) for the first two years of service. From the third through fourth year of service, employees earn 4.69 hours (15 days annually). Thereafter, employees earn 6.25 hours per pay period (20 days annually). An employee may carry forward at the end of each fiscal year (December 31) annual leave hours up to the amount s/he accrues in a year to a maximum of 20 days.
Employees earn 3.75 hours of sick leave per pay period (12 days annually) to a maximum of 20 days. Leave may be used for your own illness and medical appointments, as well as for other purposes specified in the Employee Handbook. An employee may carry forward sick leave hours up to a maximum of 150 hours (20 days).
Americans for the Arts offers employees three paid personal days off per year to be used for religious observances or personal business that needs to be transacted during regular business hours. New employees beginning prior to June 30th shall receive three days (22.5 hours) for that year and new employees starting after July 1st through November 15th shall receive 1.5 days (11.25 hours) for the remainder of that year.
Our commitment of service to the community is also reflected in the personal lives and free time of our employees. Our staff participates in numerous charitable organizations and events at both the local and national levels. Americans for the Arts offers 1 day annually of paid time off to volunteer at a local organization after completing one year of employment.
Americans for the Arts finds that our office culture and work product excel from in person interaction. That said, Americans for the Arts considers telecommuting to be a viable alternative work arrangement where an individual, job and/or business need necessitates such an option. Telecommuting is a voluntary work alternative that may be appropriate for some staff but not all staff positions are able to qualify.
Earned Paid Time Off
Americans for the Arts offers employees who are exempt from provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (exempt employees) “one earned paid time off day” for employees that work more than seven (7) consecutive days in a row (7.5 hours minimum each day).

We provide additional paid and unpaid time off as needed for bereavement, military service, school activities, and jury duty.
Employee Assistance Plan
Americans for the Arts pays the full premium for an EAP offered through The Guardian life Insurance Company and Integrated Behavioral Health for employees. This confidential service provides general counseling, financial counseling, and advice on medical questions among other information and tools. This benefit is available to employees and their family members.
Americans for the Arts has adopted a “dress appropriately” code but recognizes that some positions may call for dressier attire either on a regular basis or as needed. Staff should be prepared at all times for more professional attire by always having professional clothing accessible in the office. A good rule to follow—if you have to ask, don’t wear it.
Training and Development
We encourage employee professional development through training, education, seminar attendance, and developmental assignments that are consistent with the professional development plan employees develop with their supervisor. Americans for the Arts also maintains an organizational membership with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for their employees to use in their professional development.
